Chapter Eight

When the door shut, I looked around. The sun was just beginning to set. Lazy streaks of sunlight slid through tree branches, bathing the forest in a warm glow. I considered my options. I could either take a leisurely stroll around the property and come back before night fell. Or, I could leave my clothes here, shift into a wolf, and sprint around the woods to my heart’s content. With the added benefit of improved night vision, it was not contest.

I stripped, leaving my jeans and shirt in a neat pile next to the door. I should not have even dressed in the first place… but then again, Roman wouldn’t have let me out the door if I was still naked. I would have been down for round two, but I also needed to burn off some of the nervous energy that came with remembering my wedding. Tomorrow.

I shook off the nerves and stepped forward down the stairs. With each stride, my body changed. The wolf came to the surface and took over my body. I stretched luxuriously once I was in my wolf form. It was almost the best feeling in the world, this camaraderie with nature.

With a quiet bark, just for fun, I took off into the forest. I loved the way control I had in my wolf body. The clumsiness I experienced as a human woman made the grace and speed of my wolf-self almost unbelievable. It was effortless to leap over branches and dart around trees. I could run for hours as a wolf, lithe and powerful, when I couldn’t even run for a full minute on two legs. If wolves had opposable thumbs, I would have spent my life in my animal form. No question.

I decided to enjoy the calm evening and visit the lake. I took a quick turn and sprinted toward the beach. I could smell the fresh water fish and the coolness promised by the water. I increased my speed and shot out of the forest. Only to be met with the cool evening sand and Hunter, shifted, staring at me.

I pranced over to him, happy that we were together. Maybe I could convince him to race with me again. But Hunter was not impressed, he stood rigid, angry, his eyes trained on mine. I nipped at him, urging him to loosen up and play. Hunter snapped at me, and I darted back, shocked.

Angry, I shifted back to my human body. I could talk to him through our animal link, but I wanted the satisfaction of hearing my anger out loud.

“What the fuck?” I shouted.

Hunter growled and started to stalk away. I kicked sand at him.

“You can’t just walk away after you tried to bite me. What the hell?”

Hunter looked over his shoulder, teeth barred.

“Shift and talk to me, you asshat,” I said. “I am not shifting back just so you can bite me again.”

Hunter lunged at me then. I jerked back, throwing my arms in front of my face and belly.
